In a recent ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) meeting, they approved a bunch of new top level domains to add to the famous .com, .net, .org and other variants.
The Corporation is allowing customers, as of 2009, to register a whole top-level domain after a thorough application process. That means, yes, Apple can register .mac.
On June 9, Apple made known that they were swapping from their old .Mac to MobileMe, yet this recent development means that they may have been able to finally give their users what they were after: a true .mac web address.
There is no doubt, however, that Apple will still apply for the .mac domain and use it for it’s own purposes such as promoting products.
It seems as though Apple really lost in this case - or are they likely to surprise us all?
Haveanotherapple.mac has a nice ring, doesn’t it?
